Maybe none of that happened. Maybe they're both in the hut, or in Dragon City, and Zhao Yunlan is not actually dying at the bottom of some mountain in the middle of nowhere.

"He— He should be home, but I haven't knocked yet," Guo Changcheng replies and winces. She's really sweet and she wouldn't roll her eyes at him, but he doesn't want to look at her in case she does.

"What do you want from him anyway that got you so terrified?" She raises an eyebrow. "Trying to ask him out?"

If there's one thing Da Qing prides himself on, it's his coat, which he keeps lustrous with a steady diet of fish.

If there's a second thing he prides himself on, it's that he runs the SID with an iron paw.

Wei loves to look at Kunlun — the soft fire in his eyes, and the unruly curtain of hair falling around them, and the way his robes slip off his shoulders and he smiles, bare and shameless. But Wei loves this too — the yellow-green glow behind his eyelids as Kunlun gives and gives until Wei can't take anymore, unseen, everywhere.

It's Kunlun's turn to look at him.

"I could be your damsel in distress," Zhao Yunlan says dreamily.

Shen Wei blinks.

"Yunlan, if you're not afraid of the Ghost Army — and you should be — you would not be afraid of one ordinary monster. It's smaller than a youchu."

The man had a great body. That was just a fact. Zhao Yunlan was comfortable in his sexuality to normally admit such things, but this was Lin Jing they were talking about. They were coworkers. He was annoying too, something Zhao Yunlan was reminded of almost every time the man opened his mouth. Also, Zhao Yunlan would bet extra bonuses for the entire department that if Lin Jing was at all interested in any sort of hook up (which Zhao Yunlan definitely didn’t want), that the man would be a top. Zhao Yunlan knew what he liked and when he was younger he had his own share of awkward make outs that lead nowhere because of realized incompatible preferences. He did not need to relive those moments now, especially not with Lin Jing. He’d trust his gaydar on this one.
To Zhao Yunlan's panic, Zhu Hong didn't seem willing to let it go and just watch him be grumpy and frustrated over something he didn't want to do anything about. She took it as a personal mission.
The hardest part was perhaps how oblivious Lin Jing was to all of this. Especially when they had a murder case that always happened on Halloween, and now it was approaching again.

In his conclusion, he was truly inadequate, not because he was unworthy. It was just that he didn't understand the value, until he finally saw someone with a heart. He now lived in the light of that, in the soothing presence of that someone. Two and a half years had passed, and it had been a long time since he'd left.
Of the habits Gui Mian had acquired after he admitted to himself that he, in fact, lived in that place, perhaps the ones that seemed simplest to the eye were the ones that held the greatest meaning.

After all things ended and began again, Gui Mian was left to find where he fit in a world that was different from the one he had been born into. Stumbling upon Lin Jing halfway had not been planned, but what did he expect if he continued walking around Longcheng after all?
He wasn't surprised when Lin Jing approached instead of running away. Fearless. And a liar. Pretending to be scared when he wasn’t.
Gui Mian kind of liked it. The pretense. And the way Lin Jing would smile at him when they talked, that was sincere.

Zhao Yunlan finds a way to make space for Shen Wei's idiosyncrasies.

“I’m not drinking your blood,” Zhao Yunlan says, but he will. He knows he’ll drink Shen Wei’s blood in the same way he knew he’d let Shen Wei undress him and press him into the bed and fuck him, no matter how much it hurt the first time.

The desperate, sloppy wetness of Kunlun's tongue is waking up parts of him he has tried so fiercely to keep hidden, the parts that are not satisfied with the soft, gentle kisses they share sometimes.

The kisses are wonderful, they're so much more than Wei has ever hoped for, and they are enough. They should be enough. Anything more will only make Kunlun see Wei for who he really is — as disgusting as a copulating youchu, and much more dangerous. A youchu can't harm a god; the King of the Gui can.

There was someone moving in across the street.

4 Bright Avenue had sat empty for what felt like centuries, at least to Lan Qiao (or Qiao Qiao as her friends called her), who was eight and a half at the time. It seemed as if it had been there even before the city came to be. Surviving the way cockroaches or beetles do. While the rest of the city evolved and shifted around it, was torn down and rebuilt, 4 Bright Avenue remained. Unchanged.

The neighbors said it was cursed. Or haunted. Or worse.

What could be worse than being cursed or haunted, Qiao Qiao didn’t know.

Sometimes Lin Jing would stare at Zhao Yunlan's empty shoulder, unavoidable reflections occurring to him. And although he himself possessed all the soulfires, he also felt something essential was missing.
There was so much dust and dark water from the Wangchuan spreading everywhere, forming black mud when they pooled. There were still echoing screams and crashes here and there, from what was yet to break and fall.
Returning there, with a mere human body, was a very high risk. It required more foolishness than courage.
If enlightenment is individual, is it rebellion to make it two souls instead?

There's nothing to be ashamed of, Xiao Wei. If he can control himself, each of these droplets is his now.

The peaceful years that had already passed with the shade of that tree sheltering his naps were beginning to be hard to count to Shen San. Six or nine or more, but it still felt like he hadn’t spent enough time with Wei.
"Well, it's not like one lifetime, until old age, is enough anyway," he chuckled to himself as he sat down on the wooden platform that stretched across the front of the hut.
