It all happens before Wei can even blink. The beautiful young god looks up at him, sun glinting in his hair and eyes. Wei's heart does a flip in his chest that somehow shakes up his world more than the tumble down from the rock. The youchu's teeth sink into his neck.

Somewhere in the background of his mind there are more things, impressions twisting and hard to grasp — strong arms lifting him out of the water, and the faint scent of every wildflower Wei has ever known and could ever imagine. After that there's only darkness.

“I’m not ready to accept a system not subject to our laws,” says Zhao Yunlan, serious now.

Of course, it’s a difficult statement to make. The reality of SID is that they do deal with people who are, one way or another, above the law. The horribly trite truth is that there’s one law for ordinary people, and another for those who rule them – be it by dint of political power, or wealth, or simply fear. Zhao Yunlan’s job is, like a precarious set of scales, to try to find the balance in righting wrongs. To play the system, as best he can, to get the results that benefit those who have been harmed.

Shen Wei’s smile is subtle. Knowing. Like a fan to a flame, it kindles the low, snapping warmth simmering beneath Zhao Yunlan’s skin. “You would know more about that than me,” he says.

OR: Zhao Yunlan is alerted to the possibility of academic malfeasance by an anonymous source. During the course of his investigation he uncovers more than he bargained for.

In the dream, Shen Wei's hair falls long over his shoulders. That's the first thing Zhao Yunlan notices. It suits him so well that Zhao Yunlan thinks it must come from a memory—one of the ones that lies just within his grasp on the verge of waking.

The second thing he notices is the claws.

Chu Shuzhi thinks Zhao Yunlan isn't good for his Lordship.

Winter in Dragon City reveals love in strange, quiet ways and slowly, Chu Shuzhi begins to understand the difference between loving carefully and loving fearlessly.

"A-Wei," Shen San says. "Leave it for now. Come here."

From where he's kneeling before the small table, Shen Wei doesn't look up. He simply keeps working the mortar and pestle with tireless effort.

Shen Wei is so proud of Zhao Yunlan for quitting smoking. The method he’s chosen, however, is a problem.

Memories come and go after he meets Shen Wei.

It should be frustrating for a god to be the object of the fierce, all-consuming possessiveness of the King of the Gui, but Kunlun smiles through the curtain of his own damp hair when Wei presses him further into the pillows.

"A-Wei," Shen San says. "Leave it for now. Come here."

From where he's kneeling before the small table, Shen Wei doesn't look up. He simply keeps working the mortar and pestle with tireless effort.

Shen Wei would not leave him behind, could not.
Only he did. He pushed Yunlan out, his eyes soft and his teeth bloody. He died.
And the chasm that only seemed to bother Zhao occasionally, now swallowed him whole.

Or

Zhao Yunlan survives the Guardian Lantern and now has to live with the aftermath of Shen Wei's sacrifice.
He is not doing so well.

“Are you the evil god from the poem?” Zhao Yunlan asked even though he knew the answer already. Had known for a while, even. Their night together was but the final proof.

There are dreams in which Chu Shuzhi gets close to achieving a kind of happiness he hasn’t felt in centuries.

All things considered, Guo Changcheng is handling this surprisingly well.

"It's not like it's our first time being stranded in the wilderness together," he says cheerfully, barely a hint of a stutter as he casually grabs for Chu Shuzhi's hand and pulls him along. "I think I see a cave up that way, come on!"

Words failing him, Chu Shuzhi allows himself to be dragged. He pokes at his phone with his free hand, not expecting much, and sure enough there's no signal. Great. Just what they need with a highly volatile, starving ghost on the loose and the rest of the SID safely back at 9 University Ave. This was supposed to have been a simple exorcism, simple enough that Chu Shuzhi could have done it on his own. He'd been asked to choose a partner anyway, because buddy system, which he grudgingly admits is not the worst idea, and, well. He's gotten so used to having the kid around.

He should have picked the damn cat.

"What are you even finding?" Zhao Yunlan asked with curiosity.

Shen Wei looked at him and winced, a hint of embarrassment clearly visible in his eyes. "Would you believe me if I say I also don't know?"

He is not concerned about them in any way, whether they praise his beauty and cold light or curse his name for chasing their beloved Sun away, the Moon takes it all in stride.

There was a harsh scrape of wood. A small, sharp sound. Then a barely audible intake of breath. A gasp.

Zhao Yunlan's head snapped up.

"Who will feed Xiaomi when we're away?" Guo Changcheng asks, and Chu Shuzhi blinks.

"Everyone?"
