“You’re a policeman?” says Shen Wei, shocked.

“A director of police, actually,” replies Zhao Yunlan. “Usually I would’ve sent one of my staff, but we’re short-handed at the moment, and this really can’t wait. Shen-jiaoshou, we suspect one or more of your students may be involved in manufacturing drugs off-campus. I want to find out who it is. Do you have any ideas?”

"You're worth it," Long-ge says now, as they run their lines late into the night again, at first facing each other properly, and then all tangled in a sleepy heap in the hotel bed.

The tomes are fascinating.

Shen Wei had meant to tuck the box into an unused corner of his apartment and forget about them. That would be for the best. Instead, he finds himself curled up over the contents on his couch, turning each fragile page as if it might crumble beneath his touch.
