A drabble

Clothes, kisses, and cat fur. (A sequel to Breakage and Repair.)

"Professor Shen, thank you for coming." Wang Zheng leads him into the SID library's depths, where the old book lies wreathed in dark energy.

It is always worse when the Guardian is born either too high or too low in society.

"You don't have enough bodies, do you?" Shen Wei asks. Just arriving, he'd glanced briefly at notes on their improvised whiteboard and made this entirely too astute observation. 

Still, Zhao Yunlan isn't one to pass up an opportunity, so he says, "What would I want more bodies for, I have a great one already. You think so too; last night you—" 

"Chief!" "Lao Zhao!" A chorus of groans echoes around the room from his subordinates, but it's worth it for the faint blush that colors Shen Wei's cheeks and the rather more pronounced scowl as he glares at Zhao Yunlan.

Zhu Jiu watches from behind a tree across the street, frowning deeply. It had been such a good plan. He'd been careful, and it had been very close to the perfect crime. The local authorities hadn't noticed a thing, not even after he'd had the scheme going for months.

Zhao Yunlan has always been like this.

Thanks to Shen Wei, Su Wan gets some unusual feedback that his training is progressing well. Possibly too well.

Chu Shuzhi stepped into the office, closing the door behind him and then leaning against it. "It's getting worse," he said, not waiting for any sort of acknowledgment. He was too worried to let introductory courtesies divert them into smalltalk.

Lin Jing's call was garbled. "…weird—something, it's not human, or not anymore—" He described what he'd found in the abandoned village full of statues and strange tunnels.

One more hour of sleep and perhaps Shen Wei would realize that Wu Xie was right. Furthermore, even from a distance, he could still pamper Zhao Yunlan a little more.
He was changing. If he hadn't already, without realizing it before.

In light of all this, the technology and conveniences, the etiquette and slang, Shen Wei reviews his time with Kunlun, relives conversations line by line, and concludes: Kunlun must know this world. (For the three-sentence ficathon.)

Zhao Yunlan has always been able to give Shen Wei the gift of perspective.

He'll never get to see the damn cat again, or any of the people he considered his family, even when he felt he didn't deserve one. He'll never get to apologize to them. And yet, he died with love in his heart. So much love there was no room for regret in his final moments.
