It had all started with an offhand comment. One that Shen Wei seemed to barely consider worth muttering, but he was stressed to hide nothing from Zhao Yunlan now out of fear of losing the other. He would not have guessed those words would mean anything to anyone. Zhao Yunlan had nodded, acting impassively but Lin Jing could tell the small glint in his friend's eye that gave away when he was planning something. And Lin Jing didn't know what the plan might be, but he had to be involved.

Zhao Yunlan doesn't really know what to expect when he finally gets Shen Wei naked and in his bed—well, not quite naked yet, and only with the firm intention of getting into bed very soon.

Zhao Yunlan should really feel confused, or concerned, or maybe even terrified. He just found out that he's a mortal incarnation of a god — mortal being the unexpectedly relevant keyword here — and Shen Wei has spent an indescribable amount of time feeding his own obsession, and now this all-powerful entity has full access to him in a room that no one else can enter.

Instead he feels flattered, and exhilarated, and absolutely, mind-blowingly turned on.

During the SID’s interrogation of Shen Wei, in episode 4, Zhao Yunlan sends Da Qing in to take a turn.

Zhao Yunlan grins, knowing exactly where his mind went, and seizes the opportunity. He starts to wipe the milk with the side of his thumb, never breaking eye contact with Shen Wei as he brings it to his mouth.

Shen Wei frantically tints the windows with dark energy before he lets himself melt into the sensation. His shirt is dripping wet, and the drag of fabric across his sensitive skin, over and over again in small circles, makes him gasp into Zhao Yunlan's mouth.

A dimensional accident sends Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng to a dimension of reality in which the SID has a branch in Ye City in the 1930s.

Our heroes find that they have multiple mysteries to solve: Who is behind the killings that left ghosts scattered on the city streets? Who is the figure that the ghosts spotted running toward the crime scene? And how are Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng going to get back home?

This may not be the weirdest thing Zhao Yunlan has ever said mid-blowjob, but it's definitely in the top five.

The man had a great body. That was just a fact. Zhao Yunlan was comfortable in his sexuality to normally admit such things, but this was Lin Jing they were talking about. They were coworkers. He was annoying too, something Zhao Yunlan was reminded of almost every time the man opened his mouth. Also, Zhao Yunlan would bet extra bonuses for the entire department that if Lin Jing was at all interested in any sort of hook up (which Zhao Yunlan definitely didn’t want), that the man would be a top. Zhao Yunlan knew what he liked and when he was younger he had his own share of awkward make outs that lead nowhere because of realized incompatible preferences. He did not need to relive those moments now, especially not with Lin Jing. He’d trust his gaydar on this one.
To Zhao Yunlan's panic, Zhu Hong didn't seem willing to let it go and just watch him be grumpy and frustrated over something he didn't want to do anything about. She took it as a personal mission.
The hardest part was perhaps how oblivious Lin Jing was to all of this. Especially when they had a murder case that always happened on Halloween, and now it was approaching again.

Zhao Yunlan couldn’t remember a time in his life before he started having the Dreams.

As he leant out of the window wincing at the inevitable paperwork if the new recruit was hurt on the first day on the job, he scanned the area and his eyes landed on an impossible sight. He froze, his whole being now completely focused on the figure down below. It couldn't be. Surely it must be a mistake.

The figure turned and their eyes locked. Chestnut brown to deep fathomless black.

The Guardian Lantern has always fascinated Shen Wei deeply.

Author's Summary:

Maybe none of that happened. Maybe they're both in the hut, or in Dragon City, and Zhao Yunlan is not actually dying at the bottom of some mountain in the middle of nowhere.

"He— He should be home, but I haven't knocked yet," Guo Changcheng replies and winces. She's really sweet and she wouldn't roll her eyes at him, but he doesn't want to look at her in case she does.

"What do you want from him anyway that got you so terrified?" She raises an eyebrow. "Trying to ask him out?"

A slight canon divergence/missing scene of the moment where the auntie from the neighborhood committee leaves Guo Changcheng in front of Chu Shuzhi's door (volume 2, chapter 16).

If there's one thing Da Qing prides himself on, it's his coat, which he keeps lustrous with a steady diet of fish.

If there's a second thing he prides himself on, it's that he runs the SID with an iron paw.

They are eepy tired.

Wei loves to look at Kunlun — the soft fire in his eyes, and the unruly curtain of hair falling around them, and the way his robes slip off his shoulders and he smiles, bare and shameless. But Wei loves this too — the yellow-green glow behind his eyelids as Kunlun gives and gives until Wei can't take anymore, unseen, everywhere.

It's Kunlun's turn to look at him.

"I could be your damsel in distress," Zhao Yunlan says dreamily.

Shen Wei blinks.

"Yunlan, if you're not afraid of the Ghost Army — and you should be — you would not be afraid of one ordinary monster. It's smaller than a youchu."

In his conclusion, he was truly inadequate, not because he was unworthy. It was just that he didn't understand the value, until he finally saw someone with a heart. He now lived in the light of that, in the soothing presence of that someone. Two and a half years had passed, and it had been a long time since he'd left.
Of the habits Gui Mian had acquired after he admitted to himself that he, in fact, lived in that place, perhaps the ones that seemed simplest to the eye were the ones that held the greatest meaning.
