But hey, keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and your mysterious half-formed crushes the closest of them all, so Zhao Yunlan grins at the intrepid professor and extends an invitation. “I'm on my way to a crime scene. Care to tag along?”

Waking up with no memories can be a hard thing; not knowing who you are and who you were before. Alone and scared. Yunlan could perfectly understand that and so he tried to give this Shen Wei some free pass for being a mess, but what he couldn't understand was why did the gods suddenly decide to punish him with a man yelling "begone!" at a toaster at four in the morning? Zhao Yunlan was the best Guardian so far, he did NOT deserve this.

(or: no one in the entire world—both above and under ground—could tell yunlan a single thing about the mysterious shen wei aside from the fact that he was definitely NOT human and should NOT be messed with. figures that the second part would totally fly over yunlan's head.)

Shen Wei has issues letting go and would rather watch, but he still takes up the invitation to join.

When the depths of the underworld are more welcoming than the land of the living, you know you have a problem. Zhao Yunlan isn’t sure why the Ghost King keeps letting him wander in, but he’s not complaining.

Or, 一切. At work, in public, Shen Wei is meticulously, seamlessly polite. In bed, he's something else

Shen Wei knows he is a fool, but he yearns now to pore over these 'pointless' details: to imagine every moment of Zhao Yunlan's life leading up to their meeting.

Zhao Yunlan knows. He knows, and Shen Wei has no idea what that's going to mean.

"There was a locked drawer in Shen Wei’s study. In this drawer was a simple wooden box, almost as big as the drawer itself. In the box were the random bits of scrap paper, post-it notes, and cards."

In which Da Qing and Zhao Yunlan swap bodies, and Zhao Yunlan naturally takes the opportunity to spy on Shen Wei. (Let’s call it recon.)

“You have responsibilities, Chief Zhao. You should take better care of yourself.” Shen Wei does that judgey thing with his eyebrows that no doubt sends his students wailing with despair.

Yunlan is made of sterner stuff, but his sheepishness still feels more real than before. “Ah. I'm trying? You said I could have breakfast with you any time.”
