And Changcheng leaves after the summer is over. He leaves the beautiful blue umbrella at his grandparents’ house, along with his faraway memories of the smell of sunshine in the rice paddies, the sweet milk popsicles and the sound of constant rain. As time passes, his encounter in the forest feels more and more like a disintegrating dream.

Eighteen years later, Guo Changcheng somehow lands himself as the newest recruit of the Special Investigations Division of Long Cheng, and he begins to skirt the corners of a world he does not yet know the rules of.

Zhao Yunlan, taken aback, thanks the man as graciously as he can manage while cradling the pieces of Shen Wei's thoughts in his hands.

"It is very tedious,” Professor Shen agrees, setting down his cup of tea. “I admire your forbearance.”

“I have no forbearance,” Zhao Yunlan assures him. “I get drunk a lot and throw things.”

At age 28, Shen Wei took command of the rising Longcheng Shatterdome, and became the youngest Marshall in the world.

And at age 30, Zhao Yunlan's smile welcomed him on board of the Kunlun.
