If Shen Wei had any regrets about that little human life he had built for himself in Longcheng as a university professor, he certainly hid it from himself most of the time. On nights like that, where the incessant rain and dense mist made the air even colder and the streets even quieter, it was somehow difficult not to think about what had once been.

At the exhibition, Zhao Yunlan gazed intently at the arts before him, the snow-capped mountains, the ethereal landscapes, the birds on branches, the peonies and koi.

It was as if those images were photographs of things he had seen a long time ago, and that still remained vivid in his memory.
He needed to see the artist.

The man had a great body. That was just a fact. Zhao Yunlan was comfortable in his sexuality to normally admit such things, but this was Lin Jing they were talking about. They were coworkers. He was annoying too, something Zhao Yunlan was reminded of almost every time the man opened his mouth. Also, Zhao Yunlan would bet extra bonuses for the entire department that if Lin Jing was at all interested in any sort of hook up (which Zhao Yunlan definitely didn’t want), that the man would be a top. Zhao Yunlan knew what he liked and when he was younger he had his own share of awkward make outs that lead nowhere because of realized incompatible preferences. He did not need to relive those moments now, especially not with Lin Jing. He’d trust his gaydar on this one.
To Zhao Yunlan's panic, Zhu Hong didn't seem willing to let it go and just watch him be grumpy and frustrated over something he didn't want to do anything about. She took it as a personal mission.
The hardest part was perhaps how oblivious Lin Jing was to all of this. Especially when they had a murder case that always happened on Halloween, and now it was approaching again.

One day, the younger twin had been afraid that his brother had left for good, but it had only been a brief departure - from that day onwards they could probably count on the tips of their fingers how many times they had actually been apart for anything.
Shen Wei sighed at the lack of space, but he didn’t push the other away. He continued to focus on his cooking, leaving his brother to his goal of coffee. It was actually quite easy for him to move naturally around the other. Countless lifetimes spent together in so many ways made it second nature. Their dinner wasn’t in any danger just because Mianmian was being a menace. Sometimes the other misbehaved just to annoy Shen Wei, other times he knew it was deeper than that. Not a test but seeking reassurance. That Shen Wei was there. That he wasn’t going anywhere. Because deep down, Mianmian was still that little ghost king tugging on his brother’s robes with bloody hands.

Zhao Yunlan couldn’t remember a time in his life before he started having the Dreams.

As he leant out of the window wincing at the inevitable paperwork if the new recruit was hurt on the first day on the job, he scanned the area and his eyes landed on an impossible sight. He froze, his whole being now completely focused on the figure down below. It couldn't be. Surely it must be a mistake.

The figure turned and their eyes locked. Chestnut brown to deep fathomless black.

Shen Wei instinctively reaches for his pendant, the familiar weight steadying him as his mind circles around the same painful questions that have been haunting him. Should he tell Zhao Yunlan the truth? Will it put him in danger?

A note about early season canon: At the end of this episode Zhu Jiu sounds surprised that a mere college professor was able to counteract Wang Yike's fast, fatal aging power, which I took to mean he has not yet figured out that Shen Wei is the Envoy...and on that fragile, fragile foundation is built a story.

"Ye Zun's warmth was too much for him to handle, but as soon as he stepped away from him he felt the need to go back, to drown in that blotch of darkness. It reminded him of the smoke burning down his throat every time he took a drag on his favourite cigarettes, that awful sensation he both hated and craved."

Zhao Yunlan's consciousness somehow manages to enter the Pillar. He meets Ye Zun, a figure made of swirling smoke. They talk, they play. It distracts Zhao Yunlan, it entertains Ye Zun. The latter has a personal vendetta against his brother and is searching for someone. Both don't realise Zhao Yunlan is that someone.

Ye Zun just wanted to see the human that's so important to his brother with his own eyes, but things don't quite go according to plan.

Zhao Yunlan put himself in danger again, and Shen Wei isn't happy about it.

Zhao Yunlan wakes up covered in a cold sweat and a sharp nausea twisting in his belly. He can't make his legs work right, so he crawls to the bathroom. He hugs the toilet bowl, holding himself up by sheer force of will as he wretches into it.

There were times in the middle of the night when Chu Shuzhi caught a chill. He thought maybe it was a sense memory of all those nights spent freezing on a cold and hard prison floor.

Chu Shuzhi had no idea how much the new SID recruit would change his life.

"Let them go, and I'll do what you want," Zhao Yunlan says. His voice wavers a little, but he ignores it. He tilts his chin up a little, trying to look determined, staring defiantly into the dark. Staring at the thing he can't see, waiting in the dark.

What if things didn't quite go the way it originally did? What if Shen Wei wasn't as alone as he thought he was?

Shen Wei had lived for over 10,000 years: searching, waiting, learning, and keeping the peace. Throughout that time he lost himself a little bit and was just going through the motions as the Envoy and dedicating his time as a Professor to his students. Especially the one Dixing student he had saved that now insisted Shen Wei was a savior to them all. Every thing was fine until he came across a corpse, a student hanging from a cord, and a familiar face in a window.

A re-write of Guardian with Shen Wei whump and Zhao Yunlan paying closer attention and stubbornly insisting on taking care of Shen Wei. Also a new take on the Hallows, what if they got annoyed at the unsuccessful time loops and decided to help out a bit by giving Shen Wei premonitions? What of all those close calls SID had were only close calls because Shen Wei knew they were going to happen before it actually occurred?
