And Changcheng leaves after the summer is over. He leaves the beautiful blue umbrella at his grandparents’ house, along with his faraway memories of the smell of sunshine in the rice paddies, the sweet milk popsicles and the sound of constant rain. As time passes, his encounter in the forest feels more and more like a disintegrating dream.

Eighteen years later, Guo Changcheng somehow lands himself as the newest recruit of the Special Investigations Division of Long Cheng, and he begins to skirt the corners of a world he does not yet know the rules of.

A year and a day after the last portal to Dixing closed, a new one opens in the SID laboratory. Three people come through, and Chief Zhao’s old team is happy to see two of them.

“I have no forbearance,” Zhao Yunlan assures him. “I get drunk a lot and throw things.”

The god Kunlun is as old as the mountain range that bears his name, if not older. Or so the villagers say. He was here before any people were, as eternal as the mountains — moreso, in truth. The mountains might change, but Kunlun remains Kunlun.

At age 19, Shen Wei shook the world and gave a new breath to the Jaeger program.
At age 25, Ye Zun and their Jaeger Dixing disappeared beneath the waves.
At age 28, Shen Wei took command of the rising Longcheng Shatterdome, and became the youngest Marshall in the world.

And at age 30, Zhao Yunlan's smile welcomed him on board of the Kunlun.

A quiet evening in Yunlan's apartment. Zhao Yunan takes great pleasure in introducing Shen Wei to music he thinks he'll enjoy. Title from the poem I Am In Need of Music by Elizabeth Bishop.

Zhao Yunlan laughs unhappily. “You know, I thought once you’d admitted the truth, we could stop playing those games.”

“It’s not a game.”

"Hei Pao Shi's memories, sir. That's my ability. I can preserve thoughts in amber."

Zhao Yunlan, taken aback, thanks the man as graciously as he can manage while cradling the pieces of Shen Wei's thoughts in his hands.
