In which Shen Wei accidentally starts an after-school club and gets entangled with the SID over a high-profile theft.

An alternate take on Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's first meeting.

“Will you do anything I ask?”

Zhao Yunlan inhales sharply. The words make his knees tremble for some reason he doesn’t understand. “I will,” he says, almost too quickly, and swallows before repeating: “I will.”

Shen Wei’s eyes sparkle and Zhao Yunlan can swear he sees the flickers of flame blazing in his coal eyes. “Good.”

Zhu Hong had perfected the pout, the winsome look, and the hard fist as tools to make the world go her way, and she knew exactly how to use them. As time went on, and she’d started wanting to be stronger, she'd honed her natural abilities until she could do almost what any of her fully-transformed cousins could. She'd learned human ways so well she could blend in as completely as she wished.

None of that told her the first thing about how to be Chief Elder of the Yashou people.

"If someone were to ask Zhao Xinci later, he wouldn’t have been able to say when it was that things changed between him and his wife."

Instead of quitting, Li Qian takes a month's break and returns to Professor Shen's care. She's glad she's there, as Professor Shen has started to be more and more stressed with all the duties piled on him. And that greyish smoke occasionally poking at him can't be a good omen, either.

Zhao Yunlan wishes he were in a world where it all went differently. The Guardian Lantern sends him somewhere unexpected.

Zhao Yunlan hadn't owned an actual pair of pajamas himself since he was ten years old.

Hong-jie promises to take care of the SID's newest arrival. The aformentioned newest arrival thinks a drunken Hong-jie's idea of buiding a Snake Tribe-style cottage inside the SID is a grea idea.

At first Shen Wei had been amused by Yunlan's team bringing another box of his belongings to Yunlan's apartment every time one of them visited, as though he might not notice them moving him in if they just did it gradually enough.

"I'm sorry for interrupting, there was a phone call," Jiajia says, quickly. She reaches Professor Shen, and drops her voice. "From the SID."

"I woke up with the hazy image of a Regency AU where Zhao Yunlan comes of age and goes to take over his dead mother's crumbling estate home to escape his domineering father. There he meets a very attractive person - I couldn't choose between a butler or a librarian, but there are so many other choices - but it was very dark and gloomy on the moors and Shen Wei looked amazing, so. Also, there was a ghost, or is really a dark energy creature? Shen Wei has all his powers. Zhao Yunlan has many suspicions but also many inappropriate thoughts."

So - I'm not promising that this will be a full length story, but we're going to have a crack at a bit of Gothic nonsense, Guardian-style. Although I've already taken liberties with her concept, and will doubtless take more...

Shen Wei has forgotten everything since the war 10,000 years ago. The Black Robed Envoy’s relationship with a SID he doesn’t know is uneasy at best, and the burning of the Zhenhun Treaty makes an armistice between Haixing and Dixing increasingly uncertain.

Responsibility falls to Zhao Yunlan and his team to win back Shen Wei’s trust and convince both their governments to stand down. The SID is eager to reacclimate their favorite consultant, and Shen Wei learns quickly. But the secret he carried for so long could save or doom them, and no one knows if the power of the Hallows will be enough to tip the balance.
