The god Kunlun is as old as the mountain range that bears his name, if not older. Or so the villagers say. He was here before any people were, as eternal as the mountains — moreso, in truth. The mountains might change, but Kunlun remains Kunlun.

At age 19, Shen Wei shook the world and gave a new breath to the Jaeger program.
At age 25, Ye Zun and their Jaeger Dixing disappeared beneath the waves.
At age 28, Shen Wei took command of the rising Longcheng Shatterdome, and became the youngest Marshall in the world.

And at age 30, Zhao Yunlan's smile welcomed him on board of the Kunlun.

A quiet evening in Yunlan's apartment. Zhao Yunan takes great pleasure in introducing Shen Wei to music he thinks he'll enjoy. Title from the poem I Am In Need of Music by Elizabeth Bishop.

Zhao Yunlan laughs unhappily. “You know, I thought once you’d admitted the truth, we could stop playing those games.”

“It’s not a game.”

"Hei Pao Shi's memories, sir. That's my ability. I can preserve thoughts in amber."

Zhao Yunlan, taken aback, thanks the man as graciously as he can manage while cradling the pieces of Shen Wei's thoughts in his hands.

A story in which Zhao Yunlan is good at paperwork, Shen Wei is an unreliable borrower of clothes, and the Black Cloaked Envoy needs better occupational health and safety provisions.

Shen Wei is a demon exasperated by humans, until he accidentally acquires a human child and turns to Officer Zhao Yunlan for guidance. Zhao Yunlan meanwhile has no idea that he has the hots for a demon.

Da Qing has seen many things crumble in his ten thousand years of life but the courtship between his human and his human’s Dixingren mate has withstood time, Hallows, and a megalomaniacal brother.

Shen Wei isn’t teaching in pyjamas or giving everyone an F. He hasn’t started crying in the street or taken up juggling. It's just... something.

What happened afterwards; or, Zhao Yunlan worries.

Shen Wei asked him to stay behind, to wait for him, to take care of things on the surface. When he called for help, he went to him. Finding Shen Wei chained to that pillar, bringing him home - now Zhao Yunlan knows for sure. He belongs beside Shen Wei, and the first step will be convincing him to lean on him when he needs support.

What does Shen Wei see when he looks at him? It's not Zhao Yunlan; it can't be. It has to be someone else, something else, some secret Zhao Yunlan doesn't know. Something that makes him think Zhao Yunlan should be okay with Shen Wei being hurt.

(Set during episodes 23 and 24, after the kitchen confrontation and during the video game case.)

Steel was the only thing that had a discernible effect on the rose thicket. Dark energy splashed uselessly against it, absorbed without a trace. Cold that would slow molecules ghosted across the fresh green leaves as a harmless frost, melting away easily in the afternoon sun. Fire… Shen Wei had not dared to try fire.

A rose thicket encages the SID, Zhao Yunlan is trapped in unnatural sleep, and Shen Wei is forced to rely on Zhao Xinci’s assistance.
