Zhao Yunlan pulled out his lollipop and smirked. “And this couldn’t have waited till we saw each other this evening?”

“It could have. I couldn’t.” Shen Wei stepped closer, and his hand landed on Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder.

Shen Wei doesn't have time to be ill. Not on a day full of classes. Which, thankfully, he's already prepared, because otherwise this would be a complete disaster. He gives himself the time to make a hot cup of tea and then grimly embarks, with the same determination he's previously entered battle under.

Every Lord Guardian of Haixing of their generation must, by law and in accordance with the ancient treaty, be married to His Royal Highness the Black Cloak Envoy of Dixing. This purely ceremonial rite between the two nations has never gone awry.

“Aren’t you going to ask why I bought it?” Zhao Yunlan asks finally. He’s sitting, well more like lounging, on the couch as he waits for Shen Wei to finish getting dressed for their date.

“No,” Shen Wei says primly as he takes the matching garter off with reluctance. “I won’t ask.”

There's something I need to take care of this morning, Shen Wei had said, two days ago, and then had neatly removed himself from Zhao Yunlan's apartment and whatever this relationship was that they had been building together, without saying any more about where or why.

Five ways the world could have gone.

Zhao Yunlan returns from the past to find that Shen Wei has forgotten their future. The last memory Shen Wei has is 10,000 years old, and he only recognizes one person. The wormhole is closed, the Hallows are no help, and Ye Zun’s brainwashed army is flooding through the portal between worlds.

While a Dixing General is at least as prepared to turn back a rebel invasion as a university professor, Shen Wei has no idea how to relate to his colleagues or his friends... least of all Zhao Yunlan, who has no time to mourn the life they had when everything they know now is under threat.

Since Shen Wei and Yunlan are together, sometimes it happens that Yunlan is a little jealous of Shen Wei when he talks to others like some of his student because you know rumors about teacher and student.
And also he have heard sometimes about how the girl student says that he is looking handsome.

They need to celebrate, to shake off the last week of close calls, and going by Zhu Hong’s choice of entertainment, tonight they want to feel like regular office workers blowing off steam.

Looking back, Shen Wei can see how thoroughly Kunlun interrogated him. The careful questions, the encouraging smiles... Shen Wei told Kunlun things he had never told anyone else, things he hasn't told anyone since. It had been so flattering that a hero like Kunlun would show such avid interest in him.

In the present, with secrets he cannot share, that unremitting curiosity is a torment.

In Shen Wei’s fantasy that night, Zhao Yunlan is sitting across the desk from him, helping himself to Shen Wei’s cake.

"Yes," says the man in the white coat, "Yes, all right," which is a bit rude — no one is forcing him to stay and listen to Zhao Yunlan; no one's got him strapped to a bed.
