When a jade carving disappears from Dragon City University's private collection and there's no easy leads, all signs point to Hei Pao Shi. Zhao Yunlan hopes this will be the theft that finally reveals the man in the black cloak, but first he has to get through staff interviews with many professors of DCU who had access to collection at various times.

Zhao Yunlan is happy with his life. He has a stable job in a large firm, where he works as a consultant on financial matters. He has a nice little flat in the middle of the city, right above a bakery, where each morning he is woken by the smell of freshly baked bread. And, of course, he has a wonderful little dog because dogs are a man’s best friend, aren’t they?

Zhao Yunlan is brought back to life. Then he is brought back in time 10,000 years, to a version of the past that is different from the one he experienced the first time. And Shen Wei is alive and okay, but it’s not clear if that means everything Zhao Yunlan hopes it does. Also, Ye Zun is there. And Kunlun never died.

Or: Shen Wei and Ye Zun did end up okay, together, after they died, after Shen Wei promised to be with Zhao Yunlan again. This is the story of them all finding their way to that better ending.

AU: Zhao Yunlan's trip to the past lasts a month rather than a few days, and the rebels have only managed to steal 3 of the 4 sacred artifacts. Shen Wei is baffled and fascinated by this strange new ally.

Zhao Yunlan makes it out of Dixing alive. The price he pays is higher than he knows how to cope with. Life goes on, though, and gets even more confusing when Shen Wei suddenly returns—without his powers. Working through what's happened between them would be difficult enough, but before long, Zhao Yunlan has to realize there's much more to being Haixing's Guardian than he ever knew.
