Zhao Yunlan inhales sharply. The words make his knees tremble for some reason he doesn’t understand. “I will,” he says, almost too quickly, and swallows before repeating: “I will.”

Shen Wei’s eyes sparkle and Zhao Yunlan can swear he sees the flickers of flame blazing in his coal eyes. “Good.”

1930s AU. Shen Wei is the owner of DIxing Productions, China's biggest movie production company. Zhao Yun Lan is his unruliest talent and biggest star. When Shen Wei tries to plan Zhao Yun Lan's future for him, things naturally don't go according to the script.

It’s not easy to tell a new ghost from a live person, but there’s something about the way they take up their space in the world – a sort of thinness, a lack of strength, and even, yes, transparency in the right kind of light from the right sort of angle. Those who aren’t looking for something wrong can be forgiven for not noticing. The newer they are, the harder it is to tell.

Zhao Yunlan stares at them for a moment through the misty glass of the display counter and through the rows of pie slices, before someone raps their knuckles sharply on the counter, and he looks up.

Zhu Hong is there, red lipstick redder than blood, and snake-slitted eyes narrowed at him. “Hey, you,” she grumbles.

Yunlan tries to show how can it's be cool to be on one motorbike at Shen Wei.

The three panel dressing mirror has been sitting in the living room for a few weeks now, but Shen Wei hasn’t asked Zhao Yunlan why he bought it nor has he pointed out they have plenty of mirrors already installed in the house.

“Aren’t you going to ask why I bought it?” Zhao Yunlan asks finally. He’s sitting, well more like lounging, on the couch as he waits for Shen Wei to finish getting dressed for their date.

“No,” Shen Wei says primly as he takes the matching garter off with reluctance. “I won’t ask.”

He must be dreaming, because there's no way he magically slept and opened his eyes to a stranger who seems unreal in so many levels. Definitely unreal. Because same stranger feels like he came straight out of an oil painting worth an amount that will absolutely get him investigated for corruption, if he ever bought it. The stranger looks at him with a tender gaze, filled with devotion which seems misplaced for the sole reason that it's directed at him. So yes, he must be dreaming.

And well, in other words, Zhao Yunlan is definitely fucked.

Zhao Yunlan discovers unplumbed depths of what kind of pervert he is for Shen Wei.

Spoilers through the primordial past arc

Yunlan’s aware of how he looks right now. Holding a ridiculously long feather duster and wearing a dirty apron, he looks more like an angry housewife than the reluctant peacemaker that he ended up being. However, as he looks up to meet the eyes of the Black Cloak Envoy, the kindness and concern he sees there stops him in his tracks. He’s never been hero material anyway.

When Zhao Yunlan and his practically-estranged father join forces to figure out the truth about a shady CEO's even shadier death, their investigation brings them to a quiet seaside town.The lengths its Mayor would take to protect it have them paying the price.

“You have lived for as long as I have and so you must know that words have power. The likes of old sayings and proverbs hold a decree to them the longer it’s passed around from one breathing soul to another. They become entities and binding spells on their own through time.”

“What has that got to do with anything right now? Ghost Slayer, you are already treading a dangerous path with the choices you have made the past months. Do I still need to remind you of this?” the spirit asked.

The black robed creature acted as if he didn’t hear his companion and spoke once more. “I suppose it doesn’t matter right as of this moment,” he crossed his legs and continued, “Let me tell you a story; a secret.”

When the depths of the underworld are more welcoming than the land of the living, you know you have a problem. Zhao Yunlan isn’t sure why the Ghost King keeps letting him wander in, but he’s not complaining.
