Shen Wei had always been alone, his younger brother’s companionship doesn’t count but being the Ambassador of the Realms and a university professor at the same time had certainly been tiring. When the principal and his vice principal had suddenly throw this job onto him after the teacher in charge suddenly goes on a three month vacation. He can’t find himself to refuse.

As he lies in bed, recovering from an attack and surrounded by the small children that are fast asleep from worrying and crying, he couldn’t help but reflect back the moments he shared with these unique children who, in the future, will form the Special Investigation Department to carry on his beliefs.

Shen Wei tries to stand up from the cold, hard pavement he is lying on. When he does, he realizes there is barely any height difference between standing up and lying down. He looks down and his breath stutters in shock and confusion.

Instead of his usual leather shoes, Shen Wei is met with the sight of fluffy, light gray paws.

Zhao Yunlan starts remembering his life as Kunlun months after he first entered the world and his only clue resides on that creature (because his adult brain is now telling his baby brain that that wasn't a human) robed in white with a golden mask peering down on his crib.

Shen Wei mutters about how it’s not actually his birthday, his rebirth from the Guardian Lamp doesn’t actually count, that this is completely ridiculous, but his hands are steady as he slides his fingers under the rope to make sure there’s enough give.

And no matter what he claims Zhao Yunlan can see how his gaze is eager and hungry.

“Cats don’t get sick,” Da Qing mumbles. He hasn’t been ill since he was a weak kitten, newly given to Kunlun. Centuries of cultivation have ensured that he doesn’t suffer sickness or death the way a normal cat does.

Zhao Yunlan has no other choice but to face the aftermath; an aftermath in which Shen Wei does not exist beside him.

Shen Wei stands at Kunlun’s latest grave. He hasn’t yet seen the new infant that Kunlun has reincarnated into; that will be his next stop after here. Kunlun’s soul always shines so brightly that it’s impossible for Shen Wei to ignore, no matter how much he tells himself to keep away.
