Zhao Yunlan adapts to the sudden return of his memories. All of them.

On a Friday evening in July, Zhao Yunlan shuts off his computer with glee and shouts to the office at large, “Date night! Call at your own peril!” to which Chu Shuzhi replies, “Who would want to call you?”

Zhao Yunlan merrily turns his desk into a shrub, and the moment Chu Shuzhi’s pens drop into the branches, it changes back into a desk.

Enjoying a cruel little grin, Zhao Yunlan heads to the annoyingly expensive restaurant where Shen Wei is waiting.

It was no secret that the most sought-after bachelor on campus was Zhao Yunlan, 22, senior, criminology major, a brazen flirt who smirked at every person that looked his way, and - yeah, you get the idea. It was also not a secret that one of the top performers on Haixing INC’s “broadcasting” site happened to be, you guessed it, Zhao Yunlan, username: lollipop_boi, who consistently ranked in the weekly top 5, and the webcam favorite with a devoted following of hardcore fans. Oh, and one last thing: he pins for the TA of his forensic pathology course like it was his full-time job.

“Shen Wei,” Zhao Yunlan stops, and thinks about how best to phrase his question. “Have you ever been high before?”

“Never this pleasantly. Is that a problem?”

Kunlun seduces Ye Zun and fixes the timeline. It's not exactly a hardship.

The nightmares start after it's all over.

“I have an idea of how I can help you,” Zhao Yunlan says. “It’s a little . . . unconventional.” Or a hell of a lot, for Shen Wei. “Do you trust me?”

Shen Wei manages a smile. “With my life.”

It’s been six weeks since Ye Zun’s attempt to take over Haixing was squashed. In a move he had never seen coming, Shen Wei had destroyed his powers, using his own as the catalyst; he’d let himself burn in order to bring Ye Zun down with him. And then he’d found himself here, in Haixing, alongside Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan, living in their house. He didn’t want to be here but he had no where else to go.

Zhao Yunlan, upon coming home, throws his coat over the couch arm and stares at Ye Zun. “Have you not moved from that spot all day? How did you go from trying to destroy the world to being the laziest person I ever met? The cat gets more than you do – when he’s in cat form!”

The first time Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei met was while they were both petting Da Qing, so it was only reasonable that Da Qing got invested into their relationship right from the start. Also, Shen Wei’s first words to Zhao Yunlan were “This is a very intelligent cat,” which was the best and most appropriate come-hither line anyone ever used on anyone about anything, end of discussion. Da Qing just prayed that Zhao Yunlan wouldn’t fuck this up.

Zhao Yunlan lay beside him on the bed, on his side turned toward Shen Wei—motionless, but for the small rise and fall of his chest—but too fast for deep sleep. And his face was wet, the tears overflowing from his closed eyes only the faintest shimmer in the room's darkness.

Ai-ya, trying to get Shen Wei to take time for himself was like dragging a stone statue up a mountainside. Backwards, blindfolded, through the brambles, and barefoot.
