The first time Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei met was while they were both petting Da Qing, so it was only reasonable that Da Qing got invested into their relationship right from the start. Also, Shen Wei’s first words to Zhao Yunlan were “This is a very intelligent cat,” which was the best and most appropriate come-hither line anyone ever used on anyone about anything, end of discussion. Da Qing just prayed that Zhao Yunlan wouldn’t fuck this up.

Zhao Yunlan lay beside him on the bed, on his side turned toward Shen Wei—motionless, but for the small rise and fall of his chest—but too fast for deep sleep. And his face was wet, the tears overflowing from his closed eyes only the faintest shimmer in the room's darkness.

Ai-ya, trying to get Shen Wei to take time for himself was like dragging a stone statue up a mountainside. Backwards, blindfolded, through the brambles, and barefoot.

He dropped his head on Shen Wei's shoulder, heavy—asleep before Shen Wei even could respond, and as he slept Shen Wei risked putting one arm around him.

Zhao Yunlan is the gun and Shen Wei, despite Yunlan insisting otherwise, is the blade.

How many has it been again? Time isn’t sure—as much as he tries with his clocks and his calendars and his notebooks, keeping count of things has always been a struggle. It’s such a human disposition, as inconsequential to him as it is significant to them. But he knows, with certainty, that there have been many so far.

Enough to capture his attention, anyhow.

When Ye Zun's face twisted with fury, when he reached out his hand to take Zhao Yunlan's essence from him, there was a part of Zhao Yunlan that wanted nothing more than to close his eyes and let him. To let go and be drawn in; to be where Shen Wei was, with him again one final time before the end.

—But nothing happened.

He twists Shen Wei’s silken hair around his fingers, admiring the shine, enjoying the small spark of dark energy that snaps against his skin that is still so strange despite the years he’s had to get used to touching it.

It then untwists itself, gently floating free from his grasp. He blinks at his fingers. “The fuck?”

The cover depicted a bare-chested man wearing a hooded black cloak, a mask chased with silver, and thigh-high boots over extremely tight leather trousers. He held a swooning woman clad in equally impractical attire in one arm, and brandished a sword with his free hand. The woman was clutching a lollipop, and both figures were buffeted by particularly dramatic gales of wind as streams of lava flowed past their feet.  

“I’m afraid I’ll have to confiscate this publication,” Shen Wei managed, sounding slightly strangled in his own ears.

A new romance genre takes Dragon City by storm. Shen Wei does not approve, and Zhao Yunlan is both ruthless and cunning.

Nine times Zhao Yunlan found out Shen Wei’s secret identity. (Attempt #6 was the one with the bees.)

Shen Wei puts down his pen, but when he rights the paper and is about to close the folder, his eyes are once again drawn to the same blank section.

"Marriage," Zhao Xinci said. The terse word hit Shen Wei like a blow driving the air from his lungs. At once, he knew what this was about, and he knew why Zhao Yunlan had been summoned.
