Zhao Yunlan doesn’t remember the last time his father hugged him.

To be fair, he doesn’t remember anything that happened more than a year ago, thanks to the convenient drift-related incident, but from what he’s experienced in the last 12 months, he’s pretty sure hugs weren’t a regular part of their relationship.

The thing was, as competent as Zhao Yunlan’s team was (not that he’d ever mention it to them), for many years there had only been six of them, and two of them didn’t really leave the office. This meant that sometimes Zhao Yunlan had to handle cases by himself, even if they weren’t always the safest.

A few months after the Ye Zun incident, Zhao Yunlan finds out about the other thing Shen Wei did to get his eyesight back. It goes both better and worse than expected.

“… on my lap, Yunlan,” Shen Wei commanded and pulled Yunlan by his wrist

Yunlan sobbed through tears and gave his wrist a weak tug, his voice a mere squeak, “Lǎoshī, please…”

Zhao Yunlan knows Shen Wei's secret. He's determined to help him, if only Shen Wei would let him. Eventually, he gives up his magical abilities in order to keep Shen Wei alive.

It should be Zhao Yunlan lying in a crumpled heap on the damp, unforgiving pavement, not his overprotective, self-sacrificial husband.

What had Ye Zun done in his past life that was so bad that he deserved to be saddled with such a pair of idiots?

Zhao Yunlan feels it happen. Past and present and future lock into place; role and responsibilities and duty. He’d already known that he belonged to Shen Wei and Shen Wei belonged to him, heart and mind and body and soul. Apparently, their mingled core energies had been one step ahead.
