Four Dragon City University students have a conversation in the student lounge, and the world changes.

Guo Changcheng believes that something is very wrong with him. He's constantly in a sweat, his hands shake, and his heart always feels like it's being crushed in a trash compactor. Maybe his job at the SID is getting to him, but he started to think that he was coming down with something serious soon after he walked through the office doors on his first day. Whatever it was, he's very, very certain it will kill him one day, and soon. So he seeks the help of local biology professor and Dixingian expert Shen Wei. Shen Wei's diagnosis isn't what he expects.

Shen Wei watched him, Luo Fei.

“Statement from—oh. That’s, interesting? It’s not as long as I expected. Statement from Ye Zun regarding a city in the dark."

Da Qing considers the implications of having Shen Wei in his territory.

It's not exactly surprising or unexpected that it happens. Shen Wei should have expected it, all things considered. He supposes he just didn't expect Zhao Yunlan to get so impatient that he'd bike over on his lunch break and corner Shen Wei at his desk.

Zhao Yunlan stops by Shen Wei's office for lunch.

Then the dust settles, and it’s like they have no reason to touch each other. There are no injuries, no near death experiences. No Hallows for Zhao Yunlan to impulsively grab and have Shen Wei come sweeping in to grip at him and scold him.

And that name — Kunlun. There is something unmistakably familiar about it. Something that should be as easy and intimate as the shape of his paws, the feel of sunlight on his fur.

Da Qing curls in on the sofa and chases that feeling. That feeling of bone-deep knowing, as sure as the ground below his paws, requiring only a quick sweep of dirt to reveal the solidity underneath. Except no matter how far Da Qing tries to dig, it escapes him.

Instead, his mind skitters and turns, landing on an altogether different memory. A day in the SID over a decade ago, crouched in his cat form in a corner, away from Old Chief Zhao's sharp eyes. The day he first met Zhao Yunlan.

Zhao Yunlan gets a job offer he's a bit too curious to say no to, even if he never really planned on working for the government. Mostly because he never saw why the government would want a mostly useless historian. He didn't expect his new job to involve quite so much actual time travel.

By the end of the War, both twins felt through the earth. One of them was found and the people of Dixing took measures accordingly. The other one crawled back out of the earth ten thousand years later and found a world very different from the one he remembered; and Ye Zun has some revolutionary ideas.
