But he got no time to worry about any of that. Because he has more important things to do. Way more important. Like punching the hell out of the biggest idiot he'd ever known that wears glasses and sleeve garters.

And maybe, possibly, changes everything. For a better outcome.

The first time that damn lunatic shows up at one of their crime scenes, Zhao Yunlan doesn't really pay him any mind.

It's a cold night but Kunlun's smile feels warmer than his fur, Shen Wei thinks.

"What can I do for you," he lets his eyes rake over the man's body, "Mr. Black?"

There's another moment of hesitation. "I need more power."

"Don't we all, honey." Zhao Yunlan leans back against the bench. "I don't work on just anyone's machine. Only topnotch riders with good reputations. But if you're the Envoy that The Puppetmaster has been raving about, you definitely qualify."

Zhao Yunlan is injured after a case, and Shen Wei takes him home to care for him.

That's it, Zhao Yunlan tells himself. At least he'd saved someone. His death won't be useless.

Later, Zhao Yunlan wakes up cold and wet. His entire body hurts, his chest is heavy, he's barely breathing but he opens his eyes and sees the starry sky through clear air. He's lying on something hard and stiff.

Looking down at himself, Zhao Yunlan sees a mess of inky hair.

Sea being Shen Wei gets caught in a fishing net and Zhao Yunlan, the newest crew member on the fishing vessel, gets into trouble by saving him.
