From his feet, Da Qing growls in exasperation. Zhao Yunlan ignores him; he has to get his kicks from somewhere.

The evening flowed, lazy and meandering, slow and unhurried like a river of molasses. The ambient noises of nature, trickling in through the window left open a crack, swirled around their tiny kitchen and mixed with the quiet shuffling and impatient huffs of the dog not-so-subtly begging for scraps. The air grew heavy with the all-permeating warmth radiating from the pot of hot, fragrant stew, and heavier still with yet-unformed expectations dragged forth by the heady sweetness of the rapidly disappearing wine.
