Honestly, when Zhao Yunlan wakes up all sore in the morning he just thinks his new job is taking it out of him. Being a police officer isn't exactly easy and Zhao Yunlan is very new and that means he's mostly on his feet all day, patrolling. Of course, he's going to be a bit tired. It's not until he gets up and starts walking and realises his ass hurts that he starts to wonder a bit. But still, he brushes it off. It's not even like hurt hurt. It truly must be something strange if they can accept that he would believe them about the sentient shadow but not about this.
“The shadow was chased away by a fox,” Li Qian admits softly like she doesn’t want him to hear her say it.
“A fox?” Zhao Yunlan asks, eyebrows raised.

Sharp nails rake down his back, shredding his robes and sinking into his flesh. Kunlun grins against Xiao Wei's mouth, feeling the blood running down his back.

Every night, someone would sneak into his apartment, going around for a while before sitting on Zhao Yunlan's bed. A hand gently sets on Zhao Yunlan's face, caressing his skin slowly, treasuring every moment of it.

Zhao Yunlan always pretends to be asleep, pressing his eyes close. The touch is nice, always so nice. Zhao Yunlan finds himself relaxing into that touch every night onwards, even though yes, it is quite creepy.

"What?" Chief Zhao opens the door slightly, only poking his head out to talk to him, his voice hoarse and dry.

Guo Changcheng blinks at him, startled. There is something strange about the way Chief Zhao looks. He is panting slightly, his cheeks blushed, looking out of breath, and- why are his lips so swollen?

It’s fine. The loss of energy is fine, the itching somewhere in the back of Zhao Yunlan’s chest is expected, but never welcome.

Waking up to an empty bed, neither. The ringing silence, stretched like a poorly-tuned string, always deafens the ears.
