It’s fine. The loss of energy is fine, the itching somewhere in the back of Zhao Yunlan’s chest is expected, but never welcome.

Waking up to an empty bed, neither. The ringing silence, stretched like a poorly-tuned string, always deafens the ears.

Zhao Yunlan yawns, using his hand to cover his mouth to not be rude. But Shen Wei's eyes behind the mask are already staring at him attentively.

"Sorry, sorry, Hei Lao Ge, I did not sleep well last night." Zhao Yunlan rubs his eyes a little then grins at him.

"Yeah, probably too busy fantasizing about your crush last night to even sleep."Lin Jing mumbles mockingly under his breath, head still lowering down to work on the computer.

Young Shen Wei in war time Haixing - what if he did not sleep. What if he waited, and waited, and waited, until only his armour remained. Rumours say that numerous people attacked it, but despite the statue never waking up, no one ever got past it.

Shen Wei is eight years old when he first sees Zhao Yunlan.

“Who is that?” he asks, staring at the screen. Ye Zun doesn’t look away from the television, following the action with a focus he rarely puts into anything else.

“He’s the new striker for Dragon City FC,” his brother replies. “Zhao Yunlan.”

Shen Wei shuffles forward until he’s kneeling on the floor with his brother. From their tiny television, a man in a white and red kit breaks away with the ball at his feet. The crowds rise with a deafening roar as number eight races down the field. An auspicious number, Shen Wei thinks, heart pounding.

"What? Slander! It's you they're asking about, how does that make it my fault?" Pangzi asks.
"You were the one complaining two weeks ago about how boring things have been. You definitely jinxed us."
