Zhao Yunlan knew most people considered him quite a tactile person.

Over familiar with his oftentimes casual-sounding words, his busy hands, his lollipops, and his gregarious nature, and while that was indeed part of him, most never looked beyond it.

Which was fine with Zhao Yunlan. He didn’t want people to see beyond what he allowed.

It could have easily continued that way if it weren’t for one man.

When a long day leaves Shen Wei's dark energy reserves depleted, Zhao Yunlan discovers another secret Shen Wei had been keeping, one that leaves Zhao Yunlan somewhat afraid, but determined to take care of Shen Wei.

"If you're going to do it, do it here," Zhao Yunlan demands. It's flung like a challenge, daring Shen Wei to ignore that, out of his mouth before he fully knows what he'll be saying. "Do it where I can see you."

Shen Wei tilted his head back and closed his eyes, basking in the Hallows-light like a lizard.

In which Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan enjoy some well-deserved quiet time.

Zhao Yunlan knew this was a terrible idea. He’d known it since the moment he’d punched Chu Shuzhi, had it confirmed when Chu Shuzhi had dared him to keep going, and committed to it when he’d kissed Chu Shuzhi, desperate for anything that might force the image of explosions out of his head.

A crow dove out of the sky as Zhu Hong prepared to enter her apartment.

She had exactly enough time to think Ah. Shit. before Ya Qing revealed her human form and crowded Zhu Hong against the door. Zhu Hong gasped as Ya Qing’s fingernails dug into her shoulders, head falling back against the door to bare her throat enticingly.

Then Ya Qing snarled, “Tell me how you knew,” and Zhu Hong remembered where—and, more importantly, when—she was.

Immediately after the new sun rises in Dixing, Shen Wei takes care of Zhao Yunlan.

“Fuck,” Zhao Yunlan groans, burying his face in Shen Wei’s stomach. “This feels like the worst hangover I’ve ever had.”

Shen Wei smiles and rests his fingers on the nape of Zhao Yunlan’s neck. “Energy drain,” he says. With a Dixingren, he could do something about that by channelling some of his power into them. With Zhao Yunlan, he has no such cure; white energy and black energy cannot safely intermix for long. “Breakfast and a shower will help.”

Before, when no one had known, they couldn’t have been expected to show respect. But Hei Pao Shi’s secret is out now, and against all reason, it’s made no difference.

Like a parasite, this power robs his body of its lively, unique spirit with every second that ticks away. Every breath he takes, he loses more of himself; Shen Wei can see it, feel it, realizing with cold horror that Zhao Yunlan is dying.

Shen Wei follows Zhao Yunlan to the hotel, not knowing what to expect, but never wanting to leave his side again. A hypothetical continuation of the first novel extra.
