They are in the meats section of a supermarket in Spring City, watching Xi Xiaoyan order a whole duck, when Zhao Yunlan pulls him away. Shen Wei turns to look at him as he is dragged by the elbow to the next aisle over, clutching the shopping basket they are using to blend in in one hand.

“Let her be,” Zhao Yunlan says, “it’s the Reunion Festival.”

Li Qian spent her first day at the SID listening to Lin Jing and Zhu Hong explain about dark energy, the Dixing and Yashou people, and the history of the Hallows she’d been hired to help research. It was a dizzying brain dump of information, and even so, it wasn’t until late afternoon that the subject of the Black-Cloaked Envoy came up.

Da Qing hangs over the back of the couch and stares as lao-Zhao toes off his boots. “What did you say?”

“I’m going to a faculty schmoozefest as Professor Shen’s date.” Lao-Zhao scans the chaos next to the bed. “Have you seen my brown jacket?”

Zhao Yunlan blinks into bright sunlight, thoroughly disoriented.

It's pure chance that one day Ya Qing flies over this part of the city and not another. It's pure chance that she stops on this tree branch in this park, in sight of a large stone circle, and not somewhere else altogether. It's pure chance that it's the Black-Cloaked Envoy she finds, and not Zhu Jiu instead.

When Zhao Yunlan takes Shen Wei out for the night on what can only be a fake date for a case, Shen Wei knows better than to let himself pretend it’s real.  Unfortunately, knowing better doesn’t stop him from doing it anyway.

Two times it wasn’t a tea date, and one time it sort of was.

Ten thousand years before he's even born, Zhao Yunlan falls in love, all over again for the first time.

Cheng Xinyan knew that voice. She hurried forward to pull the curtain aside, and sure enough, Da Qing’s volatile friend was glaring daggers at an orderly, preventing him from getting close to Da Qing, who was lying on a gurney, eyes closed, head lolled to one side.

It's a give and take.
