In one universe the SID arrives in time to protect a terrified student and her teacher. That universe is not this one.

It’s not easy to tell a new ghost from a live person, but there’s something about the way they take up their space in the world – a sort of thinness, a lack of strength, and even, yes, transparency in the right kind of light from the right sort of angle. Those who aren’t looking for something wrong can be forgiven for not noticing. The newer they are, the harder it is to tell.

Zhao Yunlan stares at them for a moment through the misty glass of the display counter and through the rows of pie slices, before someone raps their knuckles sharply on the counter, and he looks up.

Zhu Hong is there, red lipstick redder than blood, and snake-slitted eyes narrowed at him. “Hey, you,” she grumbles.

Shen Wei had been uncertain of accepting Zhao Yunlan's invitation to spar.

Yunlan tries to show how can it's be cool to be on one motorbike at Shen Wei.

Zhao Yunlan knew Shen Wei was adept at disguises, so he didn't hesitate to ask.

Zhao Yunlan pulled out his lollipop and smirked. “And this couldn’t have waited till we saw each other this evening?”

“It could have. I couldn’t.” Shen Wei stepped closer, and his hand landed on Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder.

Shen Wei doesn't have time to be ill. Not on a day full of classes. Which, thankfully, he's already prepared, because otherwise this would be a complete disaster. He gives himself the time to make a hot cup of tea and then grimly embarks, with the same determination he's previously entered battle under.

Every Lord Guardian of Haixing of their generation must, by law and in accordance with the ancient treaty, be married to His Royal Highness the Black Cloak Envoy of Dixing. This purely ceremonial rite between the two nations has never gone awry.

Until now.

"If the Envoy fails to ever show up again, the treaty will be nullified and, who knows, a new dark age of war and mutually-assured-destruction will descend on them all because Zhao Yunlan wasn’t pretty enough or some bullshit like that. He could be the harbinger for the end of civilization and no one will ever know why.

"Zhao Yunlan," said Shen Wei quietly, in that way he had of making Zhao Yunlan's full name more intimate than any nickname.

Zhao Yunlan is waiting.

Zhao Yunlan had learned long ago that wanting more from Da Qing was futile. Da Qing wasn't capable of it. PWP.

He must be dreaming, because there's no way he magically slept and opened his eyes to a stranger who seems unreal in so many levels. Definitely unreal. Because same stranger feels like he came straight out of an oil painting worth an amount that will absolutely get him investigated for corruption, if he ever bought it. The stranger looks at him with a tender gaze, filled with devotion which seems misplaced for the sole reason that it's directed at him. So yes, he must be dreaming.

And well, in other words, Zhao Yunlan is definitely fucked.
