Local Interviewer asks Shen Wei, "What is love?"

Zhao Yunlan laughs. “What you must think of me, Shen-jiaoshou.” He reaches into his jacket and produces a black leather wallet. Which turns out to hold a badge, and an ID card.

“You’re a policeman?” says Shen Wei, shocked.

“A director of police, actually,” replies Zhao Yunlan. “Usually I would’ve sent one of my staff, but we’re short-handed at the moment, and this really can’t wait. Shen-jiaoshou, we suspect one or more of your students may be involved in manufacturing drugs off-campus. I want to find out who it is. Do you have any ideas?”

Our heroes find that they have multiple mysteries to solve: Who is behind the killings that left ghosts scattered on the city streets? Who is the figure that the ghosts spotted running toward the crime scene? And how are Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng going to get back home?

The man had a great body. That was just a fact. Zhao Yunlan was comfortable in his sexuality to normally admit such things, but this was Lin Jing they were talking about. They were coworkers. He was annoying too, something Zhao Yunlan was reminded of almost every time the man opened his mouth. Also, Zhao Yunlan would bet extra bonuses for the entire department that if Lin Jing was at all interested in any sort of hook up (which Zhao Yunlan definitely didn’t want), that the man would be a top. Zhao Yunlan knew what he liked and when he was younger he had his own share of awkward make outs that lead nowhere because of realized incompatible preferences. He did not need to relive those moments now, especially not with Lin Jing. He’d trust his gaydar on this one.
To Zhao Yunlan's panic, Zhu Hong didn't seem willing to let it go and just watch him be grumpy and frustrated over something he didn't want to do anything about. She took it as a personal mission.
The hardest part was perhaps how oblivious Lin Jing was to all of this. Especially when they had a murder case that always happened on Halloween, and now it was approaching again.

In his conclusion, he was truly inadequate, not because he was unworthy. It was just that he didn't understand the value, until he finally saw someone with a heart. He now lived in the light of that, in the soothing presence of that someone. Two and a half years had passed, and it had been a long time since he'd left.
Of the habits Gui Mian had acquired after he admitted to himself that he, in fact, lived in that place, perhaps the ones that seemed simplest to the eye were the ones that held the greatest meaning.

After all things ended and began again, Gui Mian was left to find where he fit in a world that was different from the one he had been born into. Stumbling upon Lin Jing halfway had not been planned, but what did he expect if he continued walking around Longcheng after all?
He wasn't surprised when Lin Jing approached instead of running away. Fearless. And a liar. Pretending to be scared when he wasn’t.
Gui Mian kind of liked it. The pretense. And the way Lin Jing would smile at him when they talked, that was sincere.

Sometimes Lin Jing would stare at Zhao Yunlan's empty shoulder, unavoidable reflections occurring to him. And although he himself possessed all the soulfires, he also felt something essential was missing.
There was so much dust and dark water from the Wangchuan spreading everywhere, forming black mud when they pooled. There were still echoing screams and crashes here and there, from what was yet to break and fall.
Returning there, with a mere human body, was a very high risk. It required more foolishness than courage.
If enlightenment is individual, is it rebellion to make it two souls instead?

The peaceful years that had already passed with the shade of that tree sheltering his naps were beginning to be hard to count to Shen San. Six or nine or more, but it still felt like he hadn’t spent enough time with Wei.
"Well, it's not like one lifetime, until old age, is enough anyway," he chuckled to himself as he sat down on the wooden platform that stretched across the front of the hut.

"Are you sure you don't know why Zhao-chu put you and me on this mission?" Lin Jing asked again.
"I have no idea," Gui Mian lied. "I also have no idea whose brilliant mind was behind the proposal that I'm more useful in the Guardian Order than living my life away from you all. I've already received enough punishments for things that shouldn't even be punished…"

"Xiao Guo thought it would be a good idea for me to learn more about your world through modern movies. Lin Jing is definitely not helping by choosing sci-fi and horror," Ye Zun said.
"Look," Lin Jing began, offended. "To start with, if you think about what we've been through, sci-fi and horror are pretty realistic, too."
"I don't know who I'll stand on that one..." Xiao Guo confessed.

Now that Dixing was finally open and free, and Shen Wei worked even harder than before to adjust - himself, his people and the Haixingren - to that new reality, Ye Zun wondered what he could do, if he still didn’t know how to fit in that world. A shared one.
Not all Haixingren were faceless existences to him anymore; he’d seen those faces up close, deliberately hurt many of them. Ye Zun was sure he didn’t need to see any of those too specific faces right now, when all he wanted was a break and some fresh air.
“How can I be so unlucky?”

"They've been locked in there for hours," Zhu Hong commented the obvious, without taking her eyes off the direction of the laboratory door.
"Chu-ge, do you think we should intervene? What if- What if-" Guo Changcheng wanted to come up with a good enough reason for them to raid the lab, but at the same time, he didn't want to think about what kind of accusation someone might unfairly receive if he started imagining too much.
"It'll be fine, Changcheng," Chu Shuzhi said from beneath the file folder covering his face as he tried to take a nap in the chair. "Lin Jing has survived that lab and himself for years enough."
"But not with company."

"I thought you wanted a deal," Lin Jing teased while his partner was unable to answer.
"You put up with me causing trouble all night. And you gave me a great time having to hug me from behind to hide certain things in public because not even around our friends were you less turned on by me. It was flattering. Consider your end of the deal paid.”

Cong Bo took a closer look at the situation around him. And the belated realization hit him harder than if he'd suddenly woken up one day with technological amnesia, and all he knew was analog.
