Another series of murders on the Dragon City University campus draws the attention of the SID.
Zhao Yunlan's first thought when anything weird happens in Dragon City University is Shen Wei. Sneezing all over the place, he barges into Shen Wei's office and grabs the cake his students gifted him.
How does Shen Wei respond to this presumptuous boundary crossing? With a softest fondest look, telling Zhao Yunlan that he shouldn't eat sweets when he's sick. And look at Zhao Yunlan's smug flirty reaction here. He knows he got away with something he shouldn't and it's because Shen Wei likes him.
Zhao Yunlan gives Shen Wei the case materials, and takes this opportunity to very coyly observe Shen Wei. (Seriously, Zhao Yunlan, your eyes don't need to be doing that while watching him.)
They are interrupted by Professor Zhang coming to Shen Wei's office. Shen Wei introduces her to Zhao Yunlan, and then is at a loss for words on how to introduce the love of his life that he met 10k years ago who doesn't remember him anymore. Zhao Yunlan takes over the introductions, and tells her that he is Shen Wei's good friend.
Shen Wei's heart may or may not go dokidoki when he hears this.
Staking Out Shen Wei's Office
While the rest of the SID is staking out the second potential victim, Zhao Yunlan pays Shen Wei a visit.
Shen Wei claims to be annoyed and unhappy about Zhao Yunlan constantly interrupting his work, as he smiles and looks at Zhao Yunlan with stars in his eyes. Zhao Yunlan claims he is just here to protect the students of Dragon City University and flirt.
The conversation takes an interesting philosophical bent, when Zhao Yunlan tells Shen wei that although he studies biology and life forms, he doesn't seem to understand people. And Shen Wei fires back with "What good is seeing through people? Does this lessen the pain and disappointment? Some tragedies are destined from the start."
This is the beginning of a trend where a lot of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan's case-related conversations eventually devolve into discussing some personal philosophies as the two get to know each other.
Flirting for Evidence
In order to fast-track finding the third culprit/potential victim, Zhao Yunlan heads to Shen Wei's office to butter him up for Professor Zhang's teaching materials/class grades.
Zhao Yunlan's internal dialogue: Lay on the charm, smile, flirt, call him a male god, yes, that's the trick.
Shen Wei's internal dialogue: I can't believe I love this idiot.
Final Confrontation
After discovering the third culprit, the SID realizes that there's one more potential victim: Professor Shen, who's being accused of harboring ill intentions by getting too close to Professor Zhang.
Zhao Yunlan comforts Shen Wei after the "rescue."
Bonus: Rehearsal of this scene, which is considerably cuddlier.
Bonus 2: Another shot of the same scene:
This case obviously hits pretty close to home for Shen Wei, with a Dixingren willing to do anything to protect the one she loves. Here is Shen Wei reacting to her guilt that she was unable to protect Professor Zhang.
Everyone is touched by the two womens' goodbyes to each other, including Zhao Yunlan, who's frustrated and close to tears at not being able to save Professor Zhang. Shen Wei was already deeply touched by the two women, and it feels like seeing Zhao Yunlan upset is the final straw that pushes him to do something about the situation.
And here he is, sneakily healing Professor Zhang right under the SID's nose.
Conclusion
The Black-Cloaked Envoy doesn't show up in this case except as an off-screen reference taking Wang Yike away. But we discover at the end that despite having ostensibly taken her away to Dixing for punishment, Shen Wei ends up reuniting her with Professor Zhang.
The case ends with Shen Wei receiving a "Thank you" card from the lovebirds (with a picture on the other side). He sees this happy relationship between a Dixingren and a Haixingren, and touches the pendant that reminds him of Kunlun, wistful.
