The cage-fighting case! Featuring more Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan teamwork, synchronization, and another battle couple sequence.
News from the Underground Fighting Ring
We open the episode with Zhao Yunlan receiving a phone call about Chu Shuzhi's ringfighting shenanigans.
Zhao Yunlan is Not Amused, and Shen Wei is apparently super into Zhao Yunlan being like this, because he's breathing kind of hard here. (Okay maybe I'm reading too much into this, but.)
Zhao Yunlan goes off about Chu Shuzhi's lack of respect for authority, and Shen Wei has to try not to grin when he calls out Zhao Yunlan for his hypocrisy.
They talk a little about how Shen Wei saved Chu Shuzhi from the punishment of his crime and sent him to the SID. And Shen Wei very smoothly adds in, "Fun fact: I sent him to spy on you."
Zhao Yunlan has a pretty relaxed reception to that reveal on the grounds of having already figured it out.
Shen Wei: So this is all water under the bridge now?
Zhao Yunlan: It was never a thing to begin with.
Look at Shen Wei's anxious little face near the end there.
After Zhao Yunlan reassures Shen Wei that he's not angry, he immediately moves on to smugly imagining Chu Shuzhi's face when he discovers Shen Wei's real identity.
After a lot of grumbling, during which Shen Wei just looks at him knowingly, Zhao Yunlan gets up to look for Chu Shuzhi.
Shen Wei calls Zhao Yunlan out on being a softie concerned for his underlings, while looking so incredibly fond I'm pretty sure my heart melted at that smile.
The Interrogation
Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan make a dramatic entrance just in time to stop the mob from going hurting people.
Once they get the crowd calmed down, Zhao Yunlan shares a sweet moment of relief with Shen Wei, as it could have gotten beyond even their control very easily.
They then interrogate the guy in charge of the fighting ring, with Zhao Yunlan taking the lead, while Shen Wei is the world's most intense supportive partner in the background.
The interrogation ends, and Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei have this amazing moment of silent communication where SHen Wei immediately knows what Zhao Yunlan wants him to do.
The Chase
Shen Wei goes out and interrupts Ye Huo's fight, but doesn't succeed in stopping Ye Huo from escaping.
Zhao Yunlan arrives just in time to pick Shen Wei up for a car chase. Let's all pause and take a moment to appreciate how tight Shen Wei's pants are in this scene.
The two of them chase Ye Huo to a fork in the road, where they're unsure which direction he went.
While they're looking around, Lin Jing and Da Qing come to the rescue. Look at the synchronized head-turn at the end of this gif!
After a whole lot of technological shenanigans, they end up splitting up to chase both directions.
The Fight
Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan arrive & see Ye Huo's motorcycle. After another shared look, they move forward.
A synchronized entrance.
Battle couple fight scene!
Teamwork makes the dream work!
The Hostage Negotation
Meanwhile, Lin Jing and Da Qing don't fare so well and get captured.
Shen Wei senses something amiss. Zhao Yunlan senses that something's up with Shen Wei.
When the kids who took Da Qing and Lin Jing hostage start shouting their demands, neither of them are surprised.
In the middle of a hostage negotiation, Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan go off on a tangent and discuss the lack of schools in Dixing. Shen Wei mentions that he's tried multiple times to get some schools built, but was blocked by the complicated politics in Dixing. Zhao Yunlan offers to go with him next time to help make the case.
What follows is a hilarious "Can too!" "Can not!" exchange between Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei about whether he gets to go back to Dixing again, considering the disaster that was his last visit.
The hostage takers are not amused at being ignored. But Ye Huo comes out to persuade the kids to stop, and we learn their backstories. The kids are trying to help Ye Huo because he saved their lives.
Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan always seeking each other out with their eyes never gets old.
Concluding the Case
Finally, they've talked long enough for Chu Shuzhi and Guo Changcheng to rescue the hostages.
Ye Huo is pretty resigned to being taken away by the Black-Cloaked Envoy, when Zhao Yunlan mentions Zheng Yi as an example of possible mercy. Shen Wei interrupts him by telling him that Dixing has their own rules they must follow.
By which Shen Wei means: he's the one to hand down merciful sentences, not some scrappy Haixing SID chief.
Look at how pleased and happy Zhao Yunlan is that they are on the same page for how to treat Ye Huo and his good deeds saving those kids.
