The Mountain-River Awl Case concludes with a fight against Zhu Jiu, the SID gets a new member, Shen Wei's identity is revealed to Zhao Yunlan via boyfriend jacket, and many speculations about the Black-Cloaked Envoy's love life are made.
Finishing up in the Cave
After they get the full story of Wang Zheng and Sang Zhan, Zhao Yunlan turns to Shen Wei to ask his opinion. Is Wang Zheng safe to trust?
This is a small moment, but so great. Zhao Yunlan asks a question, the Envoy responds, and Zhao Yunlan nods, immediately accepting the Envoy's judgement. "It's enough (that you say so)."
Zhao Yunlan's attempt to free Wang Zheng doesn't too well, but thankfully, the Envoy is there to steady him.
A wild Zhu Jiu appears! The Envoy and Zhao Yunlan jump into action. Zhao Yunlan, who has had hesitations in using his gun finally fires it here to help the Envoy.
In the aftermath of the fight, Wang Zheng begs the Envoy to save the man she's waited 100 years for. Zhao Yunlan adds his own puppy dog eyes to the mix to help.
The next time we see our heroes, Sang Zhan has been saved, Lao Chu and Xiao Guo has joined them, and Zhao Yunlan is proudly showing off the Envoy to the rest of his team.
The Envoy earnestly comments on Wang Zheng and Sang Zhan's love, immediately drawing Zhao Yunlan's attention and teasing. "Hei Lao-ge has someone in his heart?" he asks, while Shen Wei ducks his head to avoid giving away exactly who he has in his heart.
The Envoy is saved by Lao Chu's disapproving glare at Zhao Yunlan's disrespect.
Returning Home
Back at the village, Shen Wei rushes home in time to greet a returning Zhao Yunlan.
There's some innocent play-acting on Shen Wei's part, and some mild suspicion on Zhao Yunlan's part. But underneath it all, it's two people who are grinning like idiots, giddy to see each other.
Zhao Yunlan has to schmooze at a party after the success of their case, and he's stuck drinking despite the discomfort it causes him. You can see Shen Wei worried and angry about Zhao Yunlan's health being put at risk here.
Shen Wei finally has enough and takes the last drink from Zhao Yunlan to drink it himself. This trope is probably up there in popularity with "kneeling for someone (optionally in the rain)" in terms of signs of affection/friendship in c-dramas.
Shen Wei's hero moment doesn't last long, however, as he passes out immediately. Poor, lightweight Shen Wei.
And the tropes keep coming! Here we have a bedside vigil, where Zhao Yunlan reminisces about their first meeting and the instant chemistry they had.
When Zhao Yunlan goes to cover Shen Wei with his jacket, he discovers that the jacket has the scent of the monsters they were fighting the day before. He puts two and two together and laughs at his whole situation.
Later in the morning, sleepy Shen Wei wakes up to a note from Zhao Yunlan.
While putting on his glasses, he also notices the smell on his boyfriend jacket, and goes "GDI there goes my cover."
Of possible interest: Here's an alternate take on the bedside vigil, taking place in the hospital instead of the village. It's speculated they changed this because the hospital setting was too close to the novel, where Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan had a pretty steamy night of drunken make-outs and groping instead of Shen Wei passing out after one drink.
Zhao Yunlan and Da Qing Gossip
Back at the SID office, Zhao Yunlan has his thinking lollipop in his mouth, and is considering the truth behind Shen Wei's identity.
He asks Da Qing the what kind of person the Envoy is, how likely he is to use a human identity on Haixing. Da Qing scolds him and tells him he's the only to go all brotherly with the Envoy. The popular opinion is that the Envoy is someone to watch from afar, but not to approach too closely.
Here we see Da Qing mocking Zhao Yunlan's theories. "What would he want to be on Haixing for? His lover?"
Zhao Yunlan, after his initial reaction, ponders a bit more about the Envoy's love life and says: "He doesn't look like someone who has a lover."
And on that topic, Da Qing deftly brings up Shen Wei, and asks if Zhao Yunlan has been in touch with him. Zhao Yunlan does not look amused.
They are then interrupted by Wang Zheng bringing them a new case! Where surely Shen Wei will not be involved in any way at all.
